Purpose: This study was performed to characterize the physical properties of HEMA/GDMA thin films coated on an RGP lens.
Methods: A lens bar with a diameter of 13 mm and length of 300 mm was flatly cut to a thickness of 3 mm and polished using a grinder. Then, various HEMA/GDMA thin films were coated on the RGP lens and their optical constants measured using VASE. The contact angle and transmittance of the thin film were measured, and its modulus and hardness were determined using a nanoindentation instrument.
Results: The refractive index of the RGP lens was 1.456 and that of the thin film (sample 1) with HEMA coated on the RGP lens was 1.475. The contact angle of sample 1 was much smaller than that of the RGP lens, and the contact angle was slightly decreased with increasing GDMA concentration in samples 2, 3, and 4. The transmittance change of the RGP lens due to the soft lens coating was largely unchanged. The average elastic modulus and hardness of sample 1 coated with the soft lens were reduced more than those of the RGP lens. For samples 2, 3, and 4, no significant change was observed as a result of composition changes in the soft lens.
Conclusions: The contact angles of the HEMA/GDMA thin films were smaller than those of the RGP lenses. The HEMA/GDMA thin films showed a smaller contact angle with increasing GDMA concentration and the transmittance of various HEMA/GDMA films were largely unchanged.
